Bethanie barns
A self-proclaimed ‘classical spark’ turned ‘contemporary flame’, Bethanie Barns is a
multifaceted audio engineer using her orchestral background to explore unconventional approaches to music production. Prior to graduating JMC Academy, her work investigated the benefits that aleatoric and algorithmic compositional approaches could afford to modern music production. Her major project ‘Creative Tools for Non-Composing Musicians’ demonstrated how advanced macro mapping within Ableton Live could facilitate computer-aided compositional workflows, thereby enhancing listener experiences of pitch, timbre and rhythm.
Since completing her Bachelor’s qualification, Bethanie has expanded her field of interest to also include short film and documentary work.

Whilst the scope of projects varies, Bethanie prioritises work that celebrates diverse perspectives. She recently attended the Australian Women in Music Awards, working with a small documentary crew to capture footage for a larger feature (to be released at a later date). Bethanie is also currently completing re-recording mixing for ‘Toa Iti’, a short documentary detailing how a retired rugby player passes on a legacy of love, honour and integrity to his son through traditional Maori values. Furthermore, she is also completing post-production for a documentary series about individuals affected by aphasia.

With an insatiable appetite for opportunity and professional development, Bethanie is a creative powerhouse and force to be reckoned with. In the near future, she hopes to continue her work in both music production and film, seeking to further explore experimental recording approaches and to achieve raw, and subversive film making.
